This is a very simple but effective recipe using only 3 ingredients:

Beeswax which can be replaced by vegan products like Cocoa Butter.

Coconut oil as it has a really long shelf life and does not readily oxidise. Feel free to experiment and change the coconut for other oils or a mixture of oils. For example: Jojoba for extra moisturising, St John's wort oil for extra healing etc.

Vitamin E is always useful in skin products and doesn't have to be used at a high level to be effective and also adds an anti oxidising effect to the product.

Method

  1. Melt the Beeswax or Cocoa butter. It is best to use the ‘baine marie’ method. This means the inner pot can only ever get to 100C as it is limited to the temperature of the boiling water. Melting temperature of the waxes is much lower than 100C so the water doesn't need to boil but at least be heated to around 60C.
  2. When the wax is melted or close to, stir in the Coconut oil and Vitamin E. It will temporarily go solid or at least hazy again and after a minute or so of heating will re-melt and become clear.
  3. Pour it into your new, clean, sterile containers. Allow to cool and label with name and date and hey presto you have a simple balm that will last at least 2 years without oxidising.
